Mujeres Unidas Avanzando
For over 40 years, Mujeres Unidas Avanzando (MUA) has empowered Latina girls, women, and other English Language Learners (ELLs) to believe in themselves and grow into leadership roles through free classes and social services. These leaders serve as mentors to their peers, families, and community. With program graduates serving within the organization, MUA understands the Latina community on the grassroots level and is committed to their mission to increase Latina access to education and professional mobility.
In 2022, MUA installed a 23 kW solar array on the roof of their building in the diverse neighborhood of Dorchester. The system is expected to save the nonprofit approximately $165,000 over the lifetime of the system including income generated from the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program. MUA joins more than 80 nonprofit and commercial organizations in Dorchester that have installed clean solar energy.
The project was entirely funded and made possible by grants from the City of Boston Partners with Nonprofits Program, the Agnes M. Lindsay Charitable Trust, and the Tern Foundation’s TernSOLAR challenge grant program. For the solar installation process, MUA partnered with Resonant Energy, a certified B Corporation specializing in bringing accessible solar options to communities with limited resources including affordable housing units and nonprofit organizations throughout Massachusetts.
Grant Amount: $35,000
“
We’re thrilled that we were able to do this project with the support of these grants. By installing solar we’re reducing both our carbon footprint and our operating costs as an organization, which will allow us to reinvest those savings in our community. We hope other nonprofit organizations in Dorchester do the same.
